Doom 3
Okay. I bought Doom 3 yesterday for my X-Box and I've been glued to the damn thing.
You're probably thinking why in the HELL don't I buy it for my laptop, but the way I see it, my PC is more for surfing the net, downloading music, and wasting my time with blog updates instead of playing video games. That's what the console platforms are for. My RAM doesn't get slow as a result and my CPU isn't so bogged down with pointless shit either. My laptop is very spartan when it comes to luxuries and I like to keep it that way. But I'm chasing a rabbit here.
Doom 3 is Id's answer to Halo. There are similar nuances around both, but the fact the thing has the whole Satanic angle going for it is what really wins me over. Fighting these fucking demons gives you the overall sense of helplessness and no escape, just like the original Doom series did 10 years ago. I played the game all day yesterday and have burned my retina most likely from staring at the screen for so long. Closing my eyes before going to sleep, pentagrams danced in my head like visions of sugar plums. This game has really given me the morale boost that I've needed for so long.
But the thing just isn't Satanic enough! I know they need to tone things down and keep the religious assholes at bay, but the whole thing feels like an outdated Nine Inch Nails video on board the Death Star at some times. I'm still early into the game so perhaps I have yet to experience the really good stuff. Chances are I'll spend all day today playing more since the weather is shitty outside and I don't wanna go out.
All in all, Doom 3 is a much needed shot in the arm to the video game industry. I'm hoping they revive the Quake series right along with it too.
